Life critical illness insurance has grown in popularity over the years and continues to do so. Only a few years ago there may have been quite a few of us that may never have heard of life critical illness insurance let alone know what is was for. With the increased awareness of life insurance with critical illness cover there has been a growth in the insurance market with a lot more insurance companies offering critical illness insurance. The increased competition means that there are a number of different types of critical illness plans with variations in the cost structure.

All life critical illness insurance will essentially pay out a tax-free lump sum should the person insured suffer one of the conditions specified on the plan details. It is the variations in the conditions covered that are the most important difference in the critical illness covers. All insurance companies will include the seven core illnesses in their critical illness plans, these include the major conditions such as; heart attack, stroke and cancer. Most insurers cover above and beyond these seven and can have up to 40 or more conditions within their plan. However, some insurance companies may also offer what is referred to as focused life critical illness cover whereby they may cover only one or few specific conditions, for example just cancer. These are probably less common and will obviously only pay out on that condition(s) only.

Though the number of conditions included in the policy will influence the price of the plan there are other factors that will also affect the overall cost. The cover required, as in the benefit amount (sum assured) and term (number of years the cover is over), will alter the price; as the greater the sum assured and/or the longer the term of cover the greater the monthly premiums will be. Therefore, if your budget did not cover the life critical illness insurance you would like it could be argued that a little cover is better than none and by reducing the benefit amount and/or the term you may get an affordable critical illness plan. In addition to this your age, gender, smoking status, occupation, lifestyle, health and family health are taken into account before a final offer of cover and price is given.
