Glaucoma and Blindness

Glaucoma is a medical condition that is often used to describe and explain a range of different eye disorders. These eye disorders can often be associated with being dangerous due to the amount of eye pressure that is put upon the inside of the eye. Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve of the eye. The optic nerve transmits any visual information taken in by the eye and it sends signals directly to the brain to process what we are looking at. If someone was to suffer from glaucoma they will need treatment and if it is not done correctly or early enough it can lead to blindness.

Some people may describe Glaucoma as robbing someone of their eyesight. Unfortunately for sufferers this condition does not always give off any symptoms, pain or discomfort and in some cases can be left untreated for a relatively long time.

If an individual was to experience any symptoms of Glaucoma at all they may be things like:

  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Halos that appear when looking at lights
  • And in some cases intense eye pain.

Typically though, in some cases most people do not experience any symptoms at all in the early stages of this condition, and this is why it can be so difficult to diagnose and realise that you even have it.

Glaucoma comes in two different forms – Chronic glaucoma, which can commonly be known as primary glaucoma as well and open angle glaucoma. Typically there are at least half of the people around the world which end up developing this condition. If glaucoma is not treated in time, the individual’s eyesight can be harmed and in some cases it can lead to them becoming blind. It is not something that should be messed around with as it can have a devastating effect on the individual suffering from it.

In some cases people have to leave their current occupations because of this condition. They are unable to continue their current roles and duties and it may be generally unsafe to do so. This is where a critical illness insurance policy would become a very good asset to you. This type of condition is typically covered on a critical illness insurance plan. This would need to be taken out prior to the condition being diagnosed when you were completely unaware of any medical issue, however in the event of you possibly developing this condition you could be paid out the benefits of the insurance policy, therefore your financial commitment would be taken care of if you were to be diagnosed with this condition or if you were to die from it.

There can become genetic test done in certain types of laboratories to see if an individual has more chance of developing this condition. The main reasons these sort of test would be carried out would be if the individual had family history of this condition and if they show symptoms of this condition showing.
