Diabetics Life Insurance And Critical Illness Cover

There are two types of diabetes suffered within the UK, type 1 and type 2. There are over 2.8 million people who suffer from diabetes but there is a large amount of people who have not been diagnosed with this condition because in some cases the symptoms may take years to become apparent to an individual. Diabetes occurs due to the level of glucose within the body, people normally become very thirsty and getting up in the night to go to the toilet more often than usual. Those suffering from type 1 will suffer symptoms relatively quickly where as those suffering from type 2 may not realise for a few years as they symptoms are fairly gradual.

The level of sugar within your blood is normally controlled by insulin which is a hormone within the body, if then the sugar (glucose) is not broken down properly within the body this is what causes the diabetes as there is either lack of insulin or it does not function as well as it should do. Type 1 diabetes is apparent in up to fifteen percent of people within the UK and the way to control this is by injecting insulin into your body on a daily basis but also needing to live a healthier lifestyle with a controlled diet. This can however be very daunting for some people and understanding what you need to eat can be very confusing and one thing that may cause problems is deciding upon what needs to eaten on a daily basis to control your blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes is most likely to occur in people over the age of forty and accounts for a high percentage of people. Again this needs to be treated with a healthy diet and also more physical activities whether that be going for a walk, to the gym or any form of exercise.

Women can also suffer from gestational diabetes during their pregnancy, whether that be in the first, second or third trimester. If the diabetes occurs in the first trimester the diabetes is most likely to have been apparent in the body before the pregnancy where in the second or third trimester the diabetes can occur due to the body not generating enough insulin for both mother and baby but is not then harmful to the baby and will tend to go away after the baby is born.

Having diabetes can effect a person’s application for critical illness insurance or life insurance and the outcome of an underwriter’s decision will depend on the severity of each individual. The insurance provider will most likely want to confirm the exact diagnosis and medication with your GP and therefore once the application has been submitted they will write to your GP to be able to make an informed decision. It may be possible to get a standard offer, however the premium of the plan may be increased due to such a condition, but it is also possible that an insurance provider may not offer someone critical illness insurance or in some cases life insurance.
